When Is the Right Time to Start Kindergarten?

As kindergarten registration is set to begin April 4, people are talking about when is the right time for a child to start school.

Results of a recent Stanford study say children who delayed starting kindergarten by a year had lower levels of inattention and hyperactivity.

“Delaying entry into kindergarten can be beneficial in multiple ways,” Lisa Hildebrand, Director of the Vandalia-Butler City Schools Preschool, said.  “The major benefits are allowing a child more time to mature, develop and to have more exposure to all areas of life.  An additional year can be especially important for children who are struggling with attending to tasks for 10 minutes or having difficulty share or interacting with peers.”

The study’s authors say their evidence shows the benefits of delaying kindergarten entry continue, showing a reduction in inattention and hyperactivity by 73 percent in the average 11-year-old.

Hildebrand says at least one year of preschool is also recommended to help children “build self-confidence, foster social skills and better prepare” for the academic challenges in later grades.

Vandalia-Butler City Schools preschool teacher, Amber Helton states that, “Preschool is a place for fun learning in a positive environment where children can explore.  Our classrooms are language and literacy enriched.  Preschoolers benefit from having the opportunity to ask questions, learn through hands on experiences and have structure and routine throughout the day.”

When parents are making the decision about kindergarten, they should considered if a child can “sit and listen to a story for 10 minutes, play cooperatively with peers, follow two-step directions, ask for help as needed, speak in sentences of at least five words and demonstrate independence in the bathroom and dressing.”
