Certificate, Licensure & Tuition Reimbursement

Vandalia-Butler City Schools
Local Professional Development Committee

In 1996, Ohio's General Assembly passed Senate Bill 230, which authorized the establishment of Local Professional Development Committees (LPDCs). Such committees are to be established in every school district and chartered nonpublic school by September 1998. The purpose of the committees is to review the coursework and other professional development activities proposed and completed by educators within the district to determine if the requirements for renewal of certificates or licenses have been met.

The purpose of the LPDC is to foster collegial dialog, encourage professional staff development, and review IPDPs completed by educators within the Vandalia-Butler City School District for their renewal of certificates or licenses.

Professional Development Coursework for Advancement on the Pay Scale

Per the new negotiated agreement, as of January 1, 2023, there is a new process being implemented in order to advance on the salary schedule.  It is ALWAYS recommended that you complete the process PRIOR to taking a course to be certain it is approved; however, preapproval before registering for the course is not mandatory.  Without preapproval, you are taking the risk of the course not being approved for advancement.

To achieve approval, complete the Google Form linked below.  You will be asked to provide your name, building, ODE accredited institution, course title, course description, and the number of semester hours.  In Ohio, 30 contact hours = 1 semester hour.

The committee may ask for further clarification on the course, applications of the course to your area of teaching and classroom practice, or calculation of contact hours per semester hours.

Employee Tuition Reimbursement

The local LPDC committee has been tasked to be the decision maker for tuition reimbursement.  The following statement is taken from Section 6.03 of the current contract that relates to Tuition Reimbursement.

The Board will set aside the sum of $40,000 each year to be used to reimburse a unit member for college or approved coursework that relates to the unit member's profession and work assignment. Any unused balance will carry over into the following year, with the fund not to exceed $70,000.

Decisions regarding reimbursement shall be made by the LPDC and are not subject to the grievance procedure nor are they subject to the LPDC appeals process.  Guidelines for determining the procedures to be followed will be established by the LPDC.
